Homeschool
Alabama has some of the most lenient homeschooling laws in the country. In the past two decades, home educators, along with the help of city and county school districts, have established a procedure for legal homeschooling in Alabama that offers minimum government regulation.
Teaching Requirements: Alabama does not have a specific homeschooling law. Parents who wish to teach their children at home have three legal options:
• Attend a church school.
• Attend a private school.
• Instruction by a private tutor.
In accordance with the 2014 private school law, families wishing to go “coverless” must withdraw from their previous school and may file a one-time Letter of Intent to homeschool with their local Board of Education. There are no regulatory or reporting requirements beyond that.
Age requirements: Alabama’s compulsory attendance age is set from 6 to 17 years of age.
