“Greeters” serve as ambassadors to River Region newcomers and military members moving into our area. They offer a warm welcome to the community, share local tips and information, and distribute our newcomer resource guide, “Know the Community!”

This week’s Greeter Spotlight is: Rita Kafka! Get to know more about Rita below:

We moved to Wetumpka in 2000 from Michigan.  It was a job transfer for my husband. After growing up in Nebraska and living in Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky we were ready to live in a warmer climate. Actually, we liked it so much, we decided to stay here when we retired!

I’ve been delivering Welcome Baskets since 2011, though I did take a break for a couple of years and realized I really missed it so I started again.  Through the years I have met some really awesome and interesting folks.  Some funny ones too! (A young man once asked me if I happened to have a girlfriend in the basket for him!)

I am a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. I have 3 children, 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and a cat named Louie. I’m proud to say all seven Grandchildren will have graduated from college by 2025.

When I’m not driving around neighborhoods delivering Welcome Baskets, I love to travel to see my family. Three times a week I go to the Y for the Fit for Life class and to swim, and of course, I love to go out for lunch with my friends.

My advice to young people looking to have a happy retirement is this: Remember Health is more important than Wealth. Keep exercising and stay healthy.
