Getting Plugged In
New Alabama residents must obtain an Alabama driver’s license within 30 days of entering the state. Driver’s licenses are available from the driver’s license examiner’s office listed below. If you do not have a valid out-of-state license, you may be required to take an eye test, a written exam, and a road test. The cost of a new license/renewal for Alabama state residents is $36.25. If you have a valid out-of-state license, you will not be required to take the exam. The cost for an out-of-state transfer is $5, in addition to $36.25 for a new license. (NOTE: These requirements are for a regular Class D license only.)
You must bring:
- Current driver’s license
- Social Security card
- State-issued birth certificate or passport
- Marriage certificate or divorce decree if your name has changed
- School enrollment documents if you are under 18
- Proof of principal residence
In order to get the star on your license which will be required to board an airplane in 2025, you will also need to bring two valid forms of ID.
* The Alabama Star ID may only be issued from the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

Vehicle titles must be transferred and Alabama license plates must be obtained within 30 days of establishing residency. You must go to the county Probate Office to transfer your plates.
For residents new to Alabama, you will need the following:
- Your car or VIN
- Title or copy of the original title
- Lien holder’s name, address, and loan account number (if applicable)
- Bill of sale
- ID of person the car is registered to
For Alabama residents moving to another county within Alabama, you will need the following:
- Renewal notice from previous Alabama county
- Title of vehicle for which the registration is provided
There is no length-of-residence requirement to vote in Montgomery, Autauga, or Elmore County. Voter registration must be completed at the County Courthouse 14 days before any election to vote in that election.
