There’s truly an app out there for everything these days! Here’s our ultimate guide to the apps you need to have if you live in the River Region (aka Montgomery, Prattville, Millbrook, and Wetumpka).
Weather and News
You aren’t always near a TV or radio, so it’s important to have a way to check the weather and news on the go. Here are a few apps you absolutely must download if you want to stay updated and aware in the River Region.
The WSFA 12 News app is filled with all of the information you need to stay up-to-date on local, national, and global news and weather. You can watch the news live through the app, and you can catch up on reading any stories you may have missed. This app also has a calendar of local events, an updated list of local gas prices, and more.
The WSFA First Alert Weather app delivers local weather and live-saving weather alerts to the entire River Region. Check the hourly and daily forecast at any time, and keep an eye on the live radar to see what’s headed your way.
AL.com’s app is constantly updated with real-time local news, sports updates, weather forecasts, and much more. There’s even a local classifieds section!
If you’re subscribed to the Montgomery Advertiser, you can use their app to stay updated on what’s happening in the River Region and beyond.
Information and Resources
We suggest downloading these apps ASAP! You never know when you’ll need them, and they’ll make life in the River Region so much easier.
The Montgomery County AL Sheriff’s Office app is full of information and tools that will help you stay current and report any issues you run into. This app allows you to check for Amber Alerts, submit crime tips, and more.
The Montgomery County Probate Court app allows you to schedule visits to the Probate Office, check on requirements for licenses and registrations, and more. There’s even a section with voter information like poll locations and sample ballots.
The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office app contains local press releases, a crime tip submission portal, and more.
Elmore County EMA’s app provides everything you need to know to plan for an emergency. Features include an emergency checklist, a guide to handling a variety of emergencies, and an updated list of school closings. There’s also a form you can use to report damage after a storm or disaster.
Children’s of Alabama’s Poison Perils app can help you identify toxic plants and venomous or poisonous animals. There’s also a section to help you identify potentially dangerous household substances. The app includes a button that dials Poison Control, so this is a great app to keep on your phone just in case.
Food, Grocery, and Convenience Delivery
Let’s face it: Sometimes it’s easier to order your dinner or groceries and have everything delivered to your doorstep rather than cooking at home or taking a trip to the grocery store. There are several services that deliver food, groceries, and more all across the River Region. Make sure to download one or two of these apps so you’ll be prepared next time you just want to stay home and have someone bring your favorite meal or snack right to you.
If you can’t find your favorite restaurant on a food delivery app (or if you just prefer to order directly from the restaurant), here are a few of our favorite River Region eateries that have their own apps.
Chappy’s Deli has an app that includes their daily hours as well as their breakfast, deli, and catering menus. You can sign in, order your food directly through the app, and pick it up when you’re ready. If you meet the minimum requirement, you can even have your food delivered!
The Walk-On’s app allows you to order your food to-go or for curbside pickup. You can also use the app to look at the menu and check the balance on a Walk-On’s gift card.
Sign up on the Chicken Salad Chick app and order your food for in-store or curbside pickup. If your location has a drive-thru, you can select that as an option, too! This app also keeps track of your Craving Credits (rewards points) and allows you to scan your receipts to enter points.
Skip the line with the Newk’s Eatery app! Order your food through the app and pick it up in-store or curbside.
P.S. We also have Uber and Lyft— just in case you want to pick up your food but you don’t feel like driving!
Entertainment
Did you know that your phone holds the key to unlocking tons of fun in the River Region? These apps will either enhance your outings or provide you with their own entertainment.
Download the Xplore Old Alabama Town app and check out both the exteriors and interiors of historic buildings from the comfort of your own home— for free! Admire the inside of a church built in 1885, explore a late 1800s schoolhouse, and more. This would make a great rainy day activity.
The Montgomery Zoo’s app has a ZooView feature that will introduce exciting augmented reality content to your next visit. There are posters and signs throughout the zoo with the ZooView logo. Simply open the app, hold your phone up to the logo, and enjoy!
Wind Creek Casino’s app allows you to choose your location and book a hotel stay, take a look at the events calendar, reserve a dining table, and more. You can even play a few games in the app if you’re feeling lucky.
Even though it only comes around once a year, it’s nice to have an app to navigate The Alabama National Fair. Download the app and take a look at the calendar of events, buy tickets, check out the food and vendors, and more.
The Alabama Road Trips app will help you plan adventures in the River Region and across the entire state. This app has a list with dozens of road trip plans, guides to help you decide where to eat along the way, suggestions for where you should stay during your trip.
Health, Fitness, and Outdoors
Staying healthy and getting fit in the River Region? There’s an app (or a few apps) for that!
The YMCA of Greater Montgomery’s app allows you to check class offerings and event calendars, track your fitness progress, and access virtual classes on-demand.
Join HOTWORX and download their app to track your workout sessions, unlock rewards, and more.
Wynlakes Golf & Country Club members can download the club’s app to book tee times, make dining reservations, and more.
The Outdoor Alabama app is perfect for anyone who spends a lot of time hunting and fishing in the River Region. You can use this app to report your harvest, check on wildlife regulations, and view feeding times. You can even purchase your licenses directly through the app and store them on your phone.
The Alabama Wildflowers app can help you identify flowers and plants in the River Region. After selecting the features of the specimen in question, the app will present you with possibilities of what it could be.
Religion and Churches
One of the easiest ways to stay connected with your church community is with a convenient app! Here are a few River Region churches that have their own apps.
Frazer UMC’s app allows you to replay recent sermons, take notes, make donations, and more.
