If you’re new to the South and the River Region, you’re probably also new to our climate and the challenges that accompany it. Sometimes owners forget that climate changes also affect our pets.

ALLERGIES.

The Southern climate offers the perfect environment for dust mites, mold, grasses, and weeds. These allergens can cause your pet serious discomfort. Signs that a problem exists include excessive licking and scratching, head shaking, and rolling around more than usual. Pet allergies are common but can be expensive to fix if left untreated. Call your pet’s vet if you suspect a problem.

HEAT AND HUMIDITY.

The combination of the two is uncomfortable for any pet, but longhaired and flat-faced breeds have the toughest time adjusting. A summer haircut and daily brushing is an easy fix for most pets. Always provide your pet with shade and water, and try to exercise them in either the morning or early evening.

BUGS.

Mosquitos, fleas, and ticks are year-round problems in the South. Pet owners will need reliable flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Getting a veterinarian’s opinion on the best option for your pet is worth the time.
