You’ve moved in and boxes are unpacked—the next thing in order is to share your new adventure with a furry friend. Here are some guidelines and watch-outs to help you find a furbuddy who is healthy, happy, and well-socialized.

  • If purchasing from a breeder, verify the breeder is USDA-licensed and AKC-approved with no violations. This will ensure that they are held to high standards and oversight.
  • Check veterinary records to be sure your new friend is inoculated, wormed, and healthy.
  • Reputable pet stores, breeders, and shelters will microchip pets. The “Best of the Best” will also offer an extended warranty covering the health of your adopted pet.
  • Look for facilities that have pet counselors who will work with you to find a pet that is a good fit for your family. They can also help with issues such as housebreaking, grooming, nutrition, and creating a smooth transition into your pet’s new home.
