In a world full of constantly changing trends and fads, how can you decide on the right look for your home decor? Antiques are the answer!

A common misconception is that home design has to be one or the other: traditional accented with antiques, or contemporary with modern furnishings. The truth is, mixing the two creates a timeless look that will outlast the trendy designs of today and still be unique tomorrow.

Here’s how to create a home design you’ll love.

First, choose your base design. Are you wanting a more traditional feel or an edgy take? Make this decision based on what makes you comfortable and what will help you feel at home and relaxed after a long day’s work.

The next part is easy: choosing the accents. Your accenting design is the opposite of the base! If you’re leaning toward a traditional base, use contemporary pieces as accents. Vice versa, if you choose a contemporary base, add in a few traditional pieces. The key to mixing styles is all in being thoughtful and intentional with the pieces you pick.

One of the many beauties of antiques is they do not have to be used for their original purpose. Be creative and repurpose them to fit your needs. For example, you could take an antique cabinet with beautiful carved woodwork and turn it into a home bar for a bold statement piece.

The final step is making the design your own. This is the fun part— you get to go out and find specific pieces to complete your home. Bring in colors, patterns, and unique items that speak to you. Those small details will tie your home design together.
