One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Or so the saying goes. You may have written off thrift stores, thinking they are full of unnecessary items, but there is always treasure to be found amongst the masses of clothing and old furniture. Thrift stores are the best way to add appealing pieces to your wardrobe and your home—for a fraction of the price.

Where to Thrift Locally

What You Can Find

  • Shopping for your clothes at a thrift store is the best way to save money and find lots of chic pieces! Trendy pieces don’t always look great on everyone, and thrift stores are the best place to find timeless pieces that you’ll wear constantly!
  • Coats and blazers, or purses and shoes are always in stock. If you want some fun outerwear, or just want to build your staple wardrobe, the thrift store is the best place to look. Sometimes you can score real leather items, name brand items, and things of the like.
  • Books are another great thrift store find. Classics and Mass Market Paperbacks seem to be the most abundant, but it’s always a good idea to check the selection.
  • Most thrift stores have more expensive items, like house decor, side tables, and bigger pieces of furniture. Think of ways to repurpose any of these if they’re not to your taste, or if they’re a bit wobbly. A little DIY project is always fun, and you get the freedom to make the piece your own!

Seasonal Items

  • Summer is the best time to shop for winter clothes because that’s when most people are getting rid of them so the store will be full of people’s unwanted coats. Likewise, winter is the best time to shop for summer clothes.
  • Seasonal house decor is also readily available, usually right after the season. Thrift stores are full of fall decor after autumn and Santas after the Christmas season. It’s also a good place to look for Halloween costumes!

Thrifting Tips

  • Find out what days new items are put on the racks and go either that day, or the next for the “newest” pieces.
  • Even though everything is at a significantly reduced price, most thrift stores will have a certain color tag at more of a discount. This is another way to save even more money.
  • Before buying the item, check the garment for stains, holes, and how it needs to be cleaned. Something may be really cute, but if it needs to be dry cleaned and you don’t want to take the time to have that done, then it’s not really worth your money.
  • If you need something for a specific event, like a western themed party, hit up the thrift store! Save your coin, especially if you’re only going to wear the outfit once.
  • It’s a good idea to go in with a general idea of what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for skirts, start in the skirts section and then move on to other sections.
  • If you’re buying new clothes every other month for your children as they grow, check the thrift store and buy them some new pieces!
