Welcome to the River Region! Hopefully, you’ve already gotten plugged in and connected with your new community. If you haven’t yet, don’t worry. You have plenty of time, and we’re here to help you out! Here’s a quick guide to getting connected in the River Region.

 

Newcomers Clubs

  • Newcomers Club of Montgomery. The goal of the Newcomers Club is to welcome and support women new to the River Region area. Activity groups such as a book club, cooking club, scrapbooking club, movie club, and an art club are available. Monthly luncheons are also held to allow members to socialize and learn more about the club. 
  • Newcomers Club of Prattville- Millbrook. This club offers several interest groups that meet throughout the month at various times in different locations, including a book club and a crafting group. All women in the River Region are welcome to join. 

Churches and Places of Worship 

  • Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Aldersgate is a vibrant, multi-generational church with a small-town feel. This church offers traditional and contemporary worship services. They also offer engaging youth ministries, mission trips, small groups, and so much more. 
  • Christchurch Anglican. Christchurch is a Bible-based and sacramental church that celebrates Christian tradition by engaging in worship practices that link its members to the early days of Church life. They worship with both traditional and modern music, and they offer programs that will help every member of the family grow closer to God. 
  • Eastern Hills Baptist Church. Eastern Hills is a multi-generational church that aims to help its members walk alongside the Lord through teaching and preaching about the Bible. This church has valuable ministries for every member of the family. There’s also a choir group for every age. 
  • First Baptist Church. First Baptist is a great church for anyone who’s looking for the opportunity to worship the Lord and care for others. All church practices are based on Bible principles here. There are also tons of missions and ministries available, from small groups for single adults to children’s choirs. 
  • Frazer United Methodist Church. Frazer is a diverse community of faith where everyone is welcome to find hope and follow Jesus. This church offers both traditional and contemporary worship, plus small groups and missions to suit everyone’s needs and preferences. Hispanic and Chinese services are offered, along with Korean and ASL translations. 
  • Providence Presbyterian Church. Providence is a place for all to worship! Their worship is traditional in style and relevant to issues facing the world today. Plus, they have ministries and small groups for each member of the family. They even offer in-depth classes for both adults and children. 
  • Saint James Church. Saint James offers an atmosphere for dynamic traditional and contemporary worship, amazing family and recreational ministries, and meaningful opportunities to give back to the community and serve God. They are especially supportive of the military community.
  • Taylor Road Baptist Church. Taylor Road Baptist Church wants all who take part in their ministry to have a clear mind for God’s wisdom, an open heart for God’s love, and a willing hand for God’s service. They offer Bible study classes and life groups for adults, students, and children. 
  • Thorington Road Baptist Church. Thorington Road Baptist Church offers worship services throughout the week for adults and children. They also offer small groups for adults, students, and children. 
  • Trinity Presbyterian Church. Trinity has played a vital role in the River Region for more than 125 years. Discipleship, mutual accountability, and godly disciplines are the most important parts of Trinity’s overall mission and beliefs. This church offers dynamic ministry opportunities for youth, children, and adults.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Montgomery Humane Society. The Montgomery Humane Society temporarily houses homeless and abandoned pets and works to find loving permanent homes for them. It also focuses on educating the public about responsible pet ownership. Volunteers are needed at the shelter and at offsite adoption events. Responsibilities include walking dogs, cleaning kennels, and more. Volunteers as young as 8 can serve with their parents or guardians. 
  • River Region United Way. River Region United Way works to address the health, education, and financial needs of our community. Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of projects, from reading to local children to organizing fundraising efforts. 
  • Aid to Inmate Mothers. Aid to Inmate Mothers aims to foster and strengthen relationships between local inmate mothers and their children. Volunteers are needed to assist with facilitating monthly visitation sessions, mentoring newly released mothers, and more. 
  • Brantwood Children’s Home. Brantwood Children’s Home fosters abused and neglected children and teens and aims to provide them with everything they need to live happy and normal lives. Community members age 23 and older can participate in Brantwood’s Be a Friend Mentoring Program. Mentors meet with their assigned child or teen in person at least once a month. 
  • Family Guidance Center of Alabama. The Family Guidance Center supports families in our community through counseling, education, mentoring, and more. Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of projects, from landscaping to clerical work. There are also opportunities to help out with special events throughout the year. 
  • Family Sunshine Center. The Family Sunshine Center offers crisis intervention services, counseling, and more in an effort to end family violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking in our area. Volunteers are needed to help provide childcare, hotline assistance, special event support, and more. 
  • Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA).  MACOA supports River Region seniors and aims to improve their overall quality of life with meal delivery services, elder abuse prevention, and more. Volunteers are needed to prepare and deliver meals to homebound seniors. Volunteers are also needed to help with administrative work, bake and deliver birthday cakes, and package and deliver pet food to homebound seniors with pets. 
  • Montgomery Area Nontraditional Equestrians (MANE). MANE provides therapeutic horseback riding opportunities to children and adults in the River Region. Volunteers are needed to lead horses during lessons, help with grounds maintenance, care for horses, and more. Volunteers as young as 14 can serve without parental supervision.
  • Joy to Life Foundation. The Joy to Life Foundation promotes breast cancer awareness, provides free mammograms and other breast cancer screenings to medically underserved women, and more. Volunteers are needed to assist with various tasks at special events throughout the year. Volunteers are also needed to help with administrative work and fundraising. 
  • Montgomery Area Food Bank. The Montgomery Area Food Bank works to combat hunger and food insecurity in our community. Volunteers are needed to sort and repack donated food items, assist with office tasks, and support fundraising events. 
  • Montgomery Zoo. The Montgomery Zoo houses over 500 animals. It aims to educate and entertain visitors, support conservation efforts, and more. Volunteers are needed to help out with grounds maintenance, special events, public outreach and education, and more. Volunteers ages 12-16 can serve with their parents or guardians. 
  • Humane Society of Elmore County. The Humane Society of Elmore County temporarily houses homeless pets and works to find loving permanent homes for them. It also focuses on educating the public about responsible pet ownership, stopping pet overpopulation, and preventing animal cruelty. The Humane Society’s volunteer program is on pause as of June 27, 2021. Fosters are still needed to temporarily house animals in need. 
  • Elmore County Food Pantry. The Elmore County Food Pantry distributes food at no cost to local individuals and families in need. Volunteers are needed to help with administrative tasks, food deliveries, and more. 
  • Prattville/Autauga Humane Society (PAHS). PAHS temporarily houses homeless pets and works to find loving permanent homes for them. It also works to reunite lost pets with their owners and educate the public about responsible pet ownership. Volunteers are needed to help with facilitating adoptions, cleaning the shelter, caring for animals, and more. Fosters are also needed to temporarily house pets. 
  • Habitat for Humanity of Autauga and Chilton Counties. Habitat for Humanity works to build homes for community members in need. Volunteers are needed to interview prospective homeowners, conduct home visits with homeowners, coordinate fundraising efforts, and construct new homes.
  • Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF). The AWF promotes environmental conservation through education. Volunteers are needed to help with grounds maintenance, care for resident animals, support pond management activities, and more. 

Support Groups

  • Montgomery Area Autism Networking Group. The Montgomery Area Autism Networking Group aims to bring River Region parents together to share resources, create playgroups, and promote advocacy, as well as bring new services to the area for children with Autism.
  • Montgomery Cancer Center Support Group. The Montgomery Area Autism Networking Group aims to bring River Region parents together to share resources, create playgroups, and promote advocacy, as well as bring new services to the area for children with Autism.

Parenting Groups

  • Montgomery Multiples Club. The Montgomery Multiples Club is a support group for mothers with twins, triplets, or more that meets monthly and hosts various events, including a huge annual yard sale.
  • La Leche League of Montgomery. LLL serves the local area through free monthly meetings, telephone help, and mother-to-mother support. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns but also the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. Babies are expected to attend; children of all ages are welcome.
  • MOPS- Mothers of Preschoolers. MOPS gives mothers of preschoolers the chance to meet with other moms experiencing the same things. It is a nondenominational church organization, but all mothers of preschoolers are welcome, regardless of religious beliefs.
  • Family Guidance Center Co-Parenting Program. The goal of this program is to help divorced parents establish a co-parenting style that will promote stability, predictability, and a positive environment for their children.
  • Positively Parenting. This is an 8-week parenting program developed to educate and equip parents with the necessary skills to address parental responsibilities and handle problematic behavior in their children. Course topics include child development, stress management, appropriate discipline, co-parenting, healthy homes, and much more.  
  • Parent University. This program provides monthly parenting workshops on various topics that parents will find useful in everyday parenting.  

Hobby Groups & Clubs  

  • EMERGE Montgomery. EMERGE Montgomery is an organization for young professionals to connect with each other and the community. Associated with the Montgomery Chamber, it is a network of 22- 40-year-olds who currently live in the Montgomery area.
  • Capital City Master Gardener Association. This program trains and certifies individuals in horticulture and related areas. These individuals, in turn, volunteer their expertise and services to help others through horticultural projects that benefit the community.
  • Montgomery Alabama Dog Obedience Club. Founded in 1971, MADOC offers classes in obedience, rally, and agility. Members are involved in nursing home and school visits, as well as sponsoring AKC agility and obedience trials.
  • Radio Aero Modelers of Montgomery. This is an Academy of Model Aeronautics sanctioned club dedicated to the advancement and enjoyment of the hobby of Radio Control (RC) Aviation.
  • Central Alabama Master Gardener Association- Wetumpka. This organization is made up of women and men interested in gardening who live in and around Elmore County and have the time and the desire to learn, to teach positive horticultural practices to homeowners and students, and to help our community.
  • Elmore County Art Guild. The Guild was formed in 1985 by a devoted group of volunteers that wanted to share their unique skills and talents, meet people with similar interests and passions, plus help strengthen local community arts.
  • Leadership Elmore County. The mission of Leadership Elmore County is to identify and develop leaders who are committed to community and county growth and progress, who are willing to participate in a process whereby their skills and opportunities for involvement can be enhanced, and to develop a network of relationships to seek a better understanding of the issues and opportunities facing Elmore County.
  • Millbrook Kiwanis Club. Kiwanis is comprised of adult men and women who provide service to their communities by participating in projects and fundraisers that provide assistance to local charities, hospitals, schools, shelters, other community organizations, and individuals.  
  • Sunrise Rotary Club (Millbrook & Prattville). The Rotary Club is a community service organization with the purpose of connecting professionals who work together to solve community problems, provide humanitarian aid, and promote goodwill and peace.
  • Prattville-Autauga Character Coalition. The Character Coalition promotes and encourages character through engaging businesses, schools, and faith organizations in processes to enhance climate and culture; highlighting, honoring, and presenting community character awards; and more.
