In a world of plastic and manufactured beauty, there’s something truly special about heading out to a real Christmas tree farm with your family. Around Montgomery, a few farms offer the perfect mix of tradition, natural beauty, and holiday fun. Here are some great places to check out — plus ideas for planning a festive outing.
Wadsworth Christmas Tree Farm
Location: 3071 Dexter Road, Wetumpka, AL
This is a “choose and cut” farm where you can wander through fields of Murray cypress, Arizona cypress, Eastern red cedar, and even Virginia pine. The farm opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving and runs daily through the holidays (closed Thanksgiving Day).
Bonus: They offer pre-cut Fraser Firs for folks who prefer to skip the saw. There’s also a gift shop with wreaths, tree stands, and ornaments.
Johnson Christmas Tree Farm
Location: 3750 County Road 306, Selma, AL.
While we can’t grow Fraser Firs here in Alabama, the farm brings in carefully selected Fraser Firs from North Carolina. The Johnson family offers a sweet gift shop, free hot cocoa or mulled cider, and handcrafted wreaths and decorations. For 2025, their fully open season runs from Nov. 28 to Dec. 14, with specific hours on weekends and Sundays. It’s a smaller, more intimate farm, making it ideal for peaceful family photos, toddler first-tree adventures, or thoughtful tree choosing.
Spring Creek Farm
Location: 4505 South US Highway 29, Troy, AL
This newer farm is run by a close-knit family. They have trees ranging from 6 to over 10 feet, wreaths, festive accessories, and a cozy shop with snacks. Scheduled for November 22, 2025, from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. It’s a great place for a relaxed, low-key outing — pick your tree, browse the shop, and enjoy holiday treats together.
Making It a Holiday Tradition
Going to a Christmas tree farm is about more than just picking a tree — it’s an experience, and there are lots of ways to make it memorable for your whole family.
- Bring extra layers. In Alabama, early mornings can be chilly before warming up by noon. Wrap up in layers that can be added or removed as you walk through the fields.
- Measure before you go. Know how tall and wide a tree your space can handle so you don’t come home with one that’s too big (or too small).
- Plan for treats. Farms like Wadsworth often have food trucks or bonfires. Bring gloves, blankets, and some extra spending money to make a day of it.
- Capture the moment. These farms are beautiful backdrops for family photos. Whether it’s your little ones among the pines or a couple’s portrait, you’ll want to remember this day. Clear up your phone storage, or bring a camera to capture those special moments.
Why Choose A Real Tree?
- Support local businesses. Choosing a farm nearby helps keep these family-operated farms alive.
- Create a tradition. For many central Alabama families, visiting local tree farms has become a beloved holiday ritual, generation after generation.
- Eco-friendly. By choosing a real tree, you’re picking a renewable resource. Many of these farms encourage recycling the tree after the holidays.
