Choosing a pediatrician is one of the most important decisions you will make for your child. While it’s an important decision, choosing does not have to be a difficult one. Many practices offer a prenatal visit—it is free and does not obligate you to use that doctor. It is simply an opportunity to ask questions and voice any concerns on your mind.
1. INTERVIEW THE PEDIATRICIAN.
Ask about matters that are important to you. What are his or her credentials? If it’s a group practice, who will your child see for the well child visits? What are the office hours? What is the
doctor’s view on various parenting issues, such as discipline, diet, etc.?
2. USE YOUR RESOURCES.
Ask around your church, school, and neighborhood for recommendations.
3. SEEK A DOCTOR WITH WHOM YOU CAN CONNECT.
This is important to the wellbeing and peace of mind of both you and your child.
4. YOUR DECISION IS NOT PERMANENT.
If you’re not happy with your first choice, you can always move to another physician.
5. CONSIDER YOUR CHILD’S NEEDS.
If your child has special needs, make sure to seek a physician who has experience in that area.
